The Red Center

Uluru, Kings Canyon, and Alice Springs

The southern part of the Northern Territory, which includes the rail stop of Alice Springs and the national parks of Uluru-Kata Tjuta (formerly Ayer’s Rock), Watarrka (aka Kings Canyon), and West MacDonnel, are collectively known as the “Red Center”.

Historically most escorted Australia itineraries included a night here for a sunset at Uluru (Ayers Rock) followed by a sunrise the following morning at nearby Kata Tjuta, flying out that afternoon.  While certainly interesting that’s a lot of flying for a sunset.  Today a lot of people are staying longer to fit in a night in Alice, a spectacular hike through Kings Canyon, and a dinner under the stars in Uluru.  Authentic aboriginal art and culture are also available as are hot air ballooning and camel rides.

The Red Center’s climate is very similar to Phoenix but with the seasons reversed.  Their summer months of December through March are very hot with temps sometimes approaching 120 degrees.  Winter which is June through August is much cooler actually getting cold at night but still usually nice in the daytime hours.  Spring and Fall offer the best balance.
