Top End

Darwin, Nitmiluk, Kakadu, and Arnhem Land

The northern part of the Northern Territory, which includes the NT’s capital city of Darwin as well as the national parks of Litchfield, Nitmiluk (formerly Katherine’s Gorge), Kakadu and the restricted aboriginal area known as Arnhem Land; is collectively known as “The Top End”.

It’s known for it’s rugged terrain, waterfalls, wildlife including huge saltwater crocodiles, world class bird watching and fishing, and without a doubt the best place to experience aboriginal art and culture which dates back more than 50,000 years.

The Top End has just 2 season, the wet and the dry.  During the wet season which starts in November and runs through April rain is more or less constant and flooding is widespread.  It’s the best time for barimundi fishing but otherwise nearly impossible to get around and far too hot and humid to venture outside.

The dry season starts in May and runs through November but it takes a while for the flooding to recede and is still generally too hot to enjoy in the beginning and end.  The best months to visit are June through October when the temperatures are comfortable and the roads are clear.
