Whitsunday Islands

Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island, and Sailing the Whitsunday Islands

The 74 volcanic islands comprising the Whitsundays, most of which are uninhabited national parks, are located just off the Queensland coast and are mainly accessed either from the coastal town of Airlie Beach (via Whitsunday Coast Airport at Proserpine), or from Hamilton Island which is itself one of the Whitsunday Islands, and has nonstop flights from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Cairns. People travel here from all over the world to see the incredible white sands of Whitehaven Beach (many times voted world’s prettiest beach), to snorkel and dive the many pristine reefs found within the Whitsundays, to kayak, SUP, hike, and to access the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef which is a few hour’s boat ride from Hamilton Island or Airlie Beach.  In fact the Great Barrier Reef protects the islands from large swells, making them ideal for sailing, swimming, snorkeling and relaxing on secluded beaches and in hidden bays.
