Sailing the Whitsunday Islands

​Whitsunday Sailing Adventures and Explore Whitsundays

While most people experience the Whitsunday Islands either on day trips out from Airlie Beach or by staying on Hamilton Island or one of several other Whitsunday Islands, the most adventurous way is on a multi day sailing adventure.  These can run from 1 night to as many as 3 nights and range from boats catering to backpackers all the way to small luxury yachts with private cabins with ensuite (private) baths.  They are always skippered and crewed so you are not expected to do any work, include all meals and activities, and often are BYOB meaning you can bring a cooler of your favorite beverages along.

Please note that living on a sailboat requires a certain amount of dexterity.  Even while anchored the boat is likely moving a bit so holding onto something in case you lose your balance is advisable.  Also, as the Whitsunday Islands are inside the Great Barrier Reef most of the time the waves aren’t big but the wind does blow hard from time to time.  The skippers do their best to minimize exposure to rough seas by getting the boats into sheltered areas so seasickness usually isn’t a problem.  If you are prone to seasickness though it’s advisable to bring medication which can be purchased at any pharmacy.
