Skyrail Rainforest Cableway
& Kurunda Scenic RailwaySkyrail & Kurunda
The Skyrail Scenic Cableway, which travels over the McAlister Range between Smithfield and Kuranda, includes 6-person gondola cabins that travel a few feet above the treetops. A one-way trip takes about 1.5 hours, and a return trip is about 2.5 hours. Two rainforest stations, Red Peak Station and Barron Falls Station, allow exploration of the rainforest floor on boardwalks, interaction with the environment and education of the World Heritage area. A Rainforest Interpretation Center is located at the Barron Falls Station.
The Kuranda Scenic Railway is the name for the railway line that runs from Cairns to the nearby town of Kuranda. The train winds its way up the Macalister Range and operates as a travel and tourist service. It passes through the suburbs and makes a stop at Freshwater Station and Redlynch before reaching Kuranda. The railway is 23 miles long and takes about one hour and 55 minutes to climb one way, including the stops at the falls.
