Great Ocean Road
Self-Drive The Great Ocean Road
GREAT OCEAN ROAD
The Great Ocean Road begins in Torquay which is about an hour’s drive from Melbourne and runs to Port Fairy just beyond the 12 Apostles. It’s a narrow winding road much of the way with spectacular coastal views. Most people do it as a day trip from Melbourne but it takes about 11 hours whether by self drive or on an escorted tour. An alternative is to continue the coastal route into South Australia which continues to the Cape Jervis ferry to Kangaroo Island and all the way to Adelaide. For those people who like scenic drives and were considering a few nights on Kangaroo Island this can make a lot of sense. Along the way you’ll pass Bells Beach, a famous surf area, Apollo Bay, a Greek ex-pat community about halfway to the 12 Apostles, and the Great Otway National Park where you can zip line in the canopy or go paddling in search of elusive platypus.
