Dolphin Encounter, Kaikoura

CANTERBURY

The largest region in New Zealand, Canterbury is located in the central eastern part of the South Island. Its capital city is Christchurch, devastated by last year’s earthquakes, but still a natural stopping point on the main touring route. Akaroa is located on the Banks Peninsula, southeast of Christchurch. Canterbury includes Kaikoura as well, one of the few places in the world where you can always see whales and experience dolphins up close and personal. In between is Hamner Springs, a great place for a soak in a natural hot springs. To the southwest is the Mackenzie Region with beautiful Mount Cook. To the Northwest is Arthur’s Pass, the gateway to the West Coast and the highest pass across the Southern Alps.
