Akaroa
Located on the Banks Peninsula, Akaroa is an easy drive south-east of Christchurch. The township is a historic French and British settlement nestled in the heart of an ancient volcano which is now Akaroa Harbor. The best way to explore the colonial town is on foot. Begin at the information center, where you’ll find brochures and maps that will help you to decide where to walk. Take a self-guided walk to see historic cottages and explore the village with its colonial architecture, galleries, craft stores, and cafés. Many of the local restaurants focus on French cuisine.
There are other activities to do in the township as well. The museum in town is a good place to learn about the the story of Akaroa — the variety of displays and an audio visual presentation are informative. If you are interested in gardens and sculpture, make sure to visit the Giant’s House. And Akaroa is also a great place to view marine wildlife. If you have time, take a harbor cruise to view dolphins, penguins and fur seals.
