Christchurch
Christchurch
In 2010 and again in 2011 Christchurch suffered 2 major earthquakes that caused substantial damage and loss of life. Since then they’ve been gradually rebuilding the city and have made a lot of progress but much remains to do. Still, the city offers many restaurants, bars, contemporary art galleries, boutique shops, open-air markets, and interesting street art. Traditionally known as the Garden City, Christchurch is widely known for its 150 year old Botanic Gardens with its collection of exotic and native plants.
Some of the other charming city activities include Edwardian punt rides on the Avon River and riding aboard the Historic Tram to get a tour of the city. You can also visit the International Antarctic Center, The Orana Wildlife Park, or go hiking, mountain biking or driving through the Port Hills for gorgeous views of the city and coast. Christchurch makes a great base to take day trips to nearby Akaroa or Mt. Cook and a starting point to cross the Southern Alps to the West Coast through Arthur’s Pass.
