Kaikoura
Whales in Winter
Kaikoura
Kaikoura is an easy two-hour drive north of Christchurch and is a great day trip or a great place to stay on your way to the Marlborough Sounds Region. Wildlife experiences of all kinds, especially marine ones, are what Kaikoura is all about.
The beautiful village is nestled between the Seaward Kaikoura Range and the Pacific Ocean. Don’t miss the variety of marine mammal encounters in Kaikoura – whales, fur seals and dolphins live permanently in the coastal waters. Whale watching trips leave the town several times a day and the local seal colony is always delightful. The town also offers plenty of cafés, restaurants and shops to explore.
Don’t miss some of these activities you can experience while in Kaikoura: whale watching trips, dolphin encounters (swim with or see them from a boat), or take a private charter flight for beautiful aerial views of the peninsula and the Pacific Ocean to spot whales from above.
