CENTRAL NORTH REGION

The Central North Regions consists of several precincts: Rotorua, Lake Taupo, Tongariro, and Waikato.

The North Island is one big dormant volcano and Lake Taupo is the very center. It was formed when the volcano last exploded, some 27,000 years ago. Today it’s a stunning deep blue lake with many world class trout streams flowing into it and the magnificent Huka Falls just below.

This region is also the heart of Maori culture and known for the extensive thermal activity found in Rotorua, New Zealand’s Yellowstone. Sitting within the Pacific Rim of Fire, Rotorua is a geothermal wonderland with bubbling mud pools, clouds of steam, and natural hot springs. It’s also the best place to experience a Hangi (Maori feast), and there are a lot of adventure activities in the area. Places like Te Puia offer cultural experiences that combine performances – singing, dancing and haka (war dances) – with traditional Māori food.

Tongariro National Park is located here as well, with its three active valances: Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu. Emerald lakes, alpine meadows and hot springs surround the largest volcanoes in the North Island, offering a diversity of environments. The famous ‘Tongariro Alpine Crossing’ is a one-day trek that traverses the terrain of old lava flows, steaming craters, and thermal lakes along the slopes of all three volcanic mountains.

Well-known for its underground wonders, black sand surf beaches and rolling green hills, the Hamilton – Waikato region of New Zealand offers a wealth of nature-based activities and attractions. Lord of the Rings fans will not want to miss Hobbiton which is located here as well.
