Rotorua

Part of the Pacific Rim of Fire, Rotorua’s bubbling mud pools, clouds of steam, and natural hot springs is a geothermal wonderland. Once you have spent the day seeing all of the geothermal activity, you can enjoy a bath in a natural hot stream. There are also many lavish spas at the resorts in Rotorua.

The city surrounds are a great place to enjoy nature because there are mountains, rivers, forests and fresh water lakes nearby. Rotorua is known as a mountain biking mecca and offers many world-class mountain bike trails. Other activities in the area include hiking, horseback riding, swimming or fishing in the lakes and rivers.  Being out in nature is is one of the best ways to see the native wildlife and enjoy the beautiful scenery. You can even choose to visit a working sheep farm.

For adrenaline junkies, Rotorua has a lot of adventure activities to offer. The highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world is located here and there is bungy jumping, luging, zorbing, ziplining, and 4WD tours as well.

The Maori culture thrives in Rotorua – it is a great place to experience Maori culture, hospitality and food. Try a hangi feast cooked in the steaming ground, take a tour of an authentic village (of which there are many), or see a traditional Maori Haka (war dance) and show.
