Glow Worm Caves

Waitomo Caves

The Waitomo Caves were created by underground streams pushing through soft limestone earth over thousands of years. The result is a labyrinth of caves comprised of stalagmites, stalagtites and waterways. Some of the cave walls are covered in thousands of glittering glow worms. The word Waitomo comes from the Māori language wai meaning water and tomo meaning a doline or sinkhole; thus it can be translated to mean water passing through a hole. There’s a variety of activities available try for all levels of interest. You can choose from boating and walking tours through the caves and caverns or to go blackwater rafting, abseiling or ziplining.
