Otago Peninsula
The Otago Peninsula borders the southern edge of Dunedin’s harbor and is high and rugged on the ocean side while warm and protected on the harbor side. The peninsula is part of the crater wall of a large long-extinct volcano.
The Otago Peninsula makes a spectacular scenic drive. Starting at Vauxhall, you can follow the coastal road past small towns and beaches to the albatross colony at Taiaroa Head. Other wildlife attractions on the Peninsula include the fur seals at Pilots Beach, the sea lions on Te Rauone Beach, and yellow-eyed penguins at Allans Beach. Along the cliffs there are hiking trails leading to scenic overlooks, gorgeous beaches, penguin nesting areas and seal colonies.
You can return to Dunedin as well as access Larnach Castle along Highcliff Road, a winding road following the ridge of the peninsula. Take detours off this road to find other natural attractions such as The Chasm, Lovers Leap, historic lime kilns, Seal Point and Sandfly Bay (named for sand flying off the giant dunes rather than biting insects).
