Hawke’s Bay
The eastern north region of New Zealand is home to Hawke’s Bay, one of New Zealand’s warmest and driest regions, making it one of the country’s leading wine producers. Mainly it is noted for its red wines – cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah – but also some excellent white whites are produced in the region. It is a great stop on the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail.
At the center of Hawke’s Bay is Napier. The city may be one of the best examples of Art Deco architecture in the world. Following a devastating earthquake in 1931 the city was rebuilt in the then fashionable Art Deco style, and the city has taken great pains to preserve that era. Art Deco tours run daily and are a facinating way to experience the styles of that time.
Cape Kidnappers, a sandstone headland to the south of Napier, is known for its beautiful golf course and home to the largest colony of gannets (large seabirds) in the world.
