Cape Kidnappers
Overlooking Hawke’s Bay
Cape Kidnappers
Cape Kidnappers, a half hour drive from the cities of Hastings and Napier, is an extraordinary sandstone headland in Hawke’s Bay. This craggy peninsula was named by Captain Cook after an attempt by local Mäori to abduct one of his crew.
The cape is home to the largest and most accessible gannet colony in the world. The reserve includes the Saddle and Black Reef gannet colonies. Both are closed to public access. There are several ways to get to the gannet colony, but the easiest is way is to take a tour.
The golf course designed by American Tom Doak is another attraction here. Set upon the edge of the coast, the course makes the most of the natural beauty of the landscape. In fact, the sixth hole is widely considered to be one of the greatest golf holes in the world.
You can drive, walk, ride on a tractor trailer or paddle a kayak to get to Cape Kidnappers.
