Known as the Art Deco City, Napier has the most comprehensive collection of inner-city art deco buildings in the world. In fact, the city center gives you the feeling of a being in a time capsule. You can take a self-guided tour with a map from the Art Deco Trust. They also offer guided walks. And the Art Deco Weekend Summer Festival takes place every February in the city.
Other attractions around Napier include the gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers and the many vineyards – Pinot Gris and Syrah are the region’s signature varietals. In addition, a farmers’ market takes place on Saturday mornings giving visitors a chance to shop for artisan foods and fresh local produce.
Because of its Mediterranean climate, the city is a popular year-round destination and boasts a vibrant cafe culture, boutique stores, antique shops, and art galleries. Just five minutes by car or an easy ten minute bicycle ride, Ahuriri is a nice a seaside port to visit. Located on the other side of the Napier hill, it has its own unique vibe with its own cafes, bars, restaurants, galleries and boutique stores.
