Picton
Picton is your starting point for exploring the Marlborough Sounds Region because it is the South Island base for the ferry service that links the main islands of New Zealand. Ferries run from Wellington to Picton regularly.
Picton is a picturesque seaside town and also a great place to shop for souvenirs. It makes a great portal to the many island attractions of the Marlborough Sounds including marine, forest and all sorts of activities. Its harbor is sheltered and the town has a nice seafront sprinkled with cafés, restaurants and a variety of galleries and shops. The town also offers an aquarium and a floating maritime museum. Many tours originate in Picton which can take you pleasure cruising through the Marlborough Sounds, fishing, sea kayaking or dolphin watching. One of New Zealand’s most famous hiking trails, The Queen Charlotte Track, is easily accessed from here. You can enjoy the Track on foot or on a mountain bike.
Restaurants in Picton offer fresh, Marlborough Sounds seafood and local world class wines from Marlborough’s nearby wine region. Passionate foodies can find independent restaurants serving internationally influenced dishes. There are also many traditional Kiwi eateries serving hot pies, fish n chips and custard squares.
