NORTHLAND
Paihia, Russell and Kauri Coast
The heavily forested subtropical Northland region of New Zealand stretches upwards from Auckland to the very top of New Zealand and includes the iconic Bay of Islands, as well as the Kauri Coast, the Far North, and Whangarei.
The treaty establishing the country was signed at Waitangi just outside the seaside town of Paihia. Its rolling hills are covered with giant tree ferns and the massive Kauri trees, the biggest of which the Maori call Tane Mahuta – father of man and forest. Further north is Cape Reinga, where the spirits of the dead are believed to enter the underworld.
The Bay of Islands is a subtropical micro-region known for its beauty & history. It’s a great place for those that love beaches and water activities – you can take a boat cruise, swim with dolphins, kayak, dive, fish or just relax in the sun. The Bay of Islands is also known for its wineries, colonial towns and beaches. If you want to discover the coves and beaches of the Bay of Islands, Paihia is the a great place to start. Or visit the first seaport in New Zealand – Russell has historic buildings and a seaside setting full of cafes, restaurants and art galleries.
