Milford Sound
Milford Sound
Milford Sound is located on the west coast of the South Island and is gorgeous in any weather. Vertically rising from the water, the fiord’s cliffs almost appear to graze the sky. Numerous waterfalls cascade down from the fiords, some as high as 3200 feet, and the waterfalls multiply when it rains.
One of the best ways to experience the Milford Sound is on a boat cruise. There are a variety of options, ranging from day pleasure cruises to overnight cruises. Another way to enjoy the Sound is via sea kayaking. If you are interested in learning about the marine life in the Sound, there is an underwater observatory at Harrison Cove.
Possibly New Zealand’s most famous hike is the 33 mile trek which begins at the head of Lake Te Anau. The Milford Track will lead you across suspension bridges, boardwalks and a beautiful mountain pass. Along the way you will find pristine lakes, magnificent mountain peaks and extensive valley views. The tallest waterfall in New Zealand, the Sutherland Falls, is here as well.
Many people visit the Sound on a day trip from Te Anau or Queenstown.
