WELLINGTON REGION
The Wellington Region includes the city of Wellington itself as well as Wairarapa region with its outstanding wine area.
Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand and the most cosmopolitan, with the best dining and shopping. A visit to Te Papa, the museum of New Zealand, is a must do here. Other things to do here include taking a ride on the historic cable car, going to the top of Mount Victoria by car or hike for a panoramic view of the city and harbor, checking-out Zealandia – a preserve aimed to return the area to pre-human state for native wildlife, or visiting the Weta-Cave mini movie museum. The city is also a great jumping off spot for the South Island, as the the best way to arrive there is taking the ferry to Picton.
Nearby Wairarapa is New Zealand’s premier Pinot Noir region and only an hour’s drive north of Wellington. The region is at the heart of the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail. A variety of tours are available to taste at boutique wineries and tour the region.
