Wairarapa
About an hour’s drive from Wellington, the Wairarapa region offers magnificent coastlines, expansive valleys and small rural towns. Gourmet food, wine, and a lively art scene are a hallmark of the region. It is a also great place for walking and cycling with an abundance of trails.
You drive over the winding Rimutaka Hill road when approaching from Wellington. A scenic vista appears halfway down the road of bush-clad ranges in one direction and plains and a rugged coastline in the other.
This rural area offers travellers a wide range of experiences. Head out to Cape Palliser on the coast or visit the town of Martinborough which is center of the local wine industry. You can take a tour of the vineyards on your own by car or bicycle or take an organized group tour. Having a car for transportation in this region works best because it is a big area.
