Franz Josef

The Franz Josef Glacier area has some of the most beautiful scenery in New Zealand. The glacier is located just four miles from the center of the town of the same name and descends from the tops of the Southern Alps into rainforest close to sea level. This provides an opportunity to experience a dynamic glacier in a temperate environment, within easy driving and walking distance from the main highway.  In fact, you can reach the terminal face with a 20 minute walk. From the glacier parking lot, you can also hike to a choice of scenic outlooks for an impressive view of this awesome glacier. If you really want to experience the glacier, taking a heli hike or guided tour is highly recommended.

Surrounded by rainforest and with the high snow-capped Alps towering above, the town of Franz Josef is small but busting. Within a short distance of the town are a number of options for enjoying the natural attractions including a bike path, hikes of differing levels, guided walks, and kayaking. You can also relax at the glacier hot pools or explore the wildlife center.
